Liar Lily

didn't know this was a genderbender,
I'm sure they'd think it was a yuri

Nadeshiko-chan here, reviewing an extremely weird, yet oddly touching romance. Usotsuki Lily by Komura Ayumi is an ongoing gender-bender shoujo series, 11 volumes in Japan with 71 chapters scanlated in English. Now in every gender-bender, the character has some reason or another to be crossdressing. And usually, the character is trying their hardest to keep it a secret. In this case, this crossdresser is notorious in school. Alright, let’s begin:
Hinata Saotome is a first year high school whose weakness is handsome boys. So when one day she’s suddenly asked out by the handsome En Shinohara from her grade, it only takes her a second to say yes. But, what she doesn’t know is that her gorgeous new boyfriend, is the same boy whose hobby is crossdressing. What makes it even worse is that En makes a beautiful girl; so beautiful that boys who are well aware of that he’s a boy flirt with him and fall for him. These fanboys disgust En: En despises all men and has an idiotic love of girls. He thinks every girl is adorable and precious and that every boy is trash that should just die. He’s hatred is so deep that whenever he sees his own reflection, he punches the window, mirror, or whatever is doing the reflecting. He loves girls so much, he’d rather see a reflection of a cute girl than himself, which is why he crossdresses. Hinata begins regretting her decision, which is understandable. But she after discovers how cool and kind En is, she decides to reluctantly accept his hobby and go out with him anyway. And because of him, she often has to crossdress herself, and boy Hinata has a huge amount of fangirls.
En looks really cool as a boy.
Even though it’s odd, their love for each other is touching: its not hard to realize that their lovesick idiots, especially En who thinks Hinata is the cutest girl there ever could be. En may love all girls, but he’s not a flirt and is extremely loyal to Hinata. And even though he cares about looking like a cute girl, he doesn’t care about acting like a girl: he’s brusque and very manly. He also shows no signs of wanting to stop his weird hobby. Hinata, as I said before, really is a fool for good looks. She’s also an energetic and outgoing girl, and considering she lets her boyfriend get away with crossdress, she seems to have a high tolerance for things that are considered socially out of the norm.  Both of are the jealous type, but En is usually jealous of boy-Hinata’s fangirls and Hinata of En’s fanboys.
The story is a sweet romance, showing En’s and Hinata’s couple growth; it’s also show various other couples and their love stories, which are usually quite cute. But the reason I stopped reading was because it often felt like a gag manga: all comedy and no progress. It’s in no way a serious manga, the author not caring about the timeline or making sense whatsoever. It’s a gag manga with sweet romance intertwined in its comedy. Though for such a happy-go-lucky manga, the kisses are rather intense. Anyway I stopped reading, but I didn’t completely abandon the series: I often go and randomly pick new chapters to read; it’s a fun manga and I feel after you’ve met all the characters, you don’t really need to read the chapters in order. Its not tragic or dramatic, just a funny manga that will make you laugh and sometimes make you think “how cute”.  I recently heard that Ayumi-sensei is working a spin-off series called Boy's Lily in which En is a normal guy who recenetly started dating Hinata whose hobby is cross-dressing. It sounds pretty interesting, as soon as the first chapter is scanlated I'll write a mini-review. Alright, bye-bye
